Is your lampshade starting to match the dirt path outside or does your room seem to be getting darker and darker? If so there is a pretty good chance your lampshade is collecting large amounts of dirt, smoke, and lint and it may be time to clean it. Before you grab your lampshade and throw it in the washer it is important to remember there are hundreds on unique lampshades and therefore it is always a good idea to contact the manufacturer before you try any cleaning methods we or your friends suggest.
Quick Tips...
- You an air compressor to blow the dust off
- Vacuum the surface
- Use a small brush to brush off the dirt
- Wash with mild liquid dish soap
- Use a lint roller or tape to remove debris
Air Clean...
The majority of the time your lampshade is dirty because dust and lint has settled on the surface of the shade. In this case one of the safest and easiest ways to clean your shade is by blowing it off. Depending on your resources a air compressor, blow dryer, or compressed air can be used to accomplish this task. Be sure and take your shade outside before you begin cleaning and depending on how dirty your lamp shade is it might be a good idea to wear a mask.
Brush clean...
If you have tried to air clean your shade and have noticed it is not removing all the dust or your shade is pleated and you are finding it hard to get into the cracks then cleaning your shade with a brush could be your next best option. Depending on the design, size, and shape of your lampshade you can use the brush that is best for you but we recommend either an unused toothbrush or paintbrush to accomplish this task. Once you have brushed the dust and lint free it is usually a good idea to complete the cleaning with a quick air clean.
Water clean...
If your lampshade is at the end of its rope and requires a more in depth clean then washing it with water is going to be the most effective way. Once again it is important to contact the manufacturer before you use this method as your particular lampshade may be unable to get wet without damaging your shade. When cleaning with water we recommend mixing a mild liquid dish soap with water and gently rinsing the shade with this mixture and if necessary using a soft brush or sponge to remove stains and spots. Do not use laundry detergent because those detergents are usually to strong and harsh for the average lampshade.
